If your trip is short, going straight from Guwahati to Cherrapunji saves a night. It is about 150 km and four and a half hours - the Guwahati-Shillong highway as far as the Umiam Lake bypass, then the Sohra road down through the Mawkdok gorge onto the plateau.
It is a long day in the car, so we break it properly: a tea halt at Nongpoh, twenty minutes at Umiam Lake, and the Mawkdok viewpoint before the last descent. Guests flying into Guwahati in the morning usually reach Sohra with enough light left for one waterfall on arrival day. Bigger vehicles are worth it on this route - an Innova, a Crysta or the Endeavour is noticeably easier over four and a half hours.

Guwahati to Cherrapunji (Sohra) taxi - FAQ
Updated August 2026
How long is the Guwahati to Cherrapunji drive?+
About 150 km and 4.5 hours, going via the Shillong bypass. From Guwahati airport it is a little longer - allow closer to 5 hours.
Is it better to break the journey at Shillong?+
If you have the days, yes - a Shillong night lets you see Laitlum and Umiam properly. If you are on a short trip, driving straight through to Sohra buys you a full extra day on the plateau, and that is the trade most people prefer.
Can we see anything on the way?+
Umiam Lake and the Mawkdok gorge viewpoint are both on the route and cost you very little time. Elephant Falls is a short detour outside Shillong if you leave Guwahati early.
Which vehicle suits this route?+
An Ertiga or an Innova for most groups. It is four and a half hours with a winding final hour, and the extra room matters. For six or more with luggage, take the Innova Crysta or the Endeavour.
Do you drop back to Guwahati at the end of the trip?+
Yes - most guests run this in reverse on the last day, with the flight time built into the pickup. Tell us the departure and we will work backwards from it.
