Cherrapunji - Sohra to everyone who lives there - is only 54 km from Shillong, but the road takes about two hours and deserves every minute. It leaves the pine ridges, drops through the Mawkdok Dympep gorge with its zip-line and its viewpoint, and comes out onto the wet plateau above the Bangladesh plains where the waterfalls are.
Most guests take this as a full-day return with a driver who waits at each stop, because the falls, caves and viewpoints are spread over 20 km of plateau and there is nothing useful to hail between them. One-way drops to a Sohra homestay work too if you are staying the night. Either way the car is yours for the day, with fuel and parking included.

How far is Cherrapunji from Shillong by road?+
About 54 km, roughly 2 hours each way on the Shillong-Sohra road. It is slower than the distance suggests because the road winds down through the Mawkdok gorge - which is the best part of the drive.
Should I book a return taxi or one way?+
A full-day return is what almost everyone needs. Cherrapunji's sights are scattered across 20 km of plateau with no reliable local transport between them, so a car that waits at each stop is the only practical way round. One-way drops make sense only if you are staying the night in Sohra.
What time should we start?+
Around 8 am from your Shillong hotel. That gets you to the main falls before the tour buses and before the afternoon cloud closes the viewpoints - a real risk from June to September.
Is the road safe in monsoon?+
Yes, with a local driver. It is tarred and maintained, but it is winding, and in heavy rain visibility drops fast. Our drivers do this road year-round and know which viewpoints are worth stopping at on a given day and which are just cloud.
Can we add Dawki or Mawlynnong on the same day?+
It is possible but rushed - Sohra and Dawki are in different directions from Shillong. Most guests give each a separate day, or take the 4-day Meghalaya circuit that covers both properly.
