Dawki sits on the Bangladesh border about 180 km from Guwahati, and every metre of it is hill road once Jorabat is behind you - up NH-6 past Umiam Lake, around Shillong, and then down the beautiful, winding Pynursla road to the Umngot. Allow five and a half to six hours of driving. It is a long run, which is exactly why having your own car and driver matters: the shared-sumo alternative means changing vehicles in Shillong and losing the day's best light.

Most guests do this as part of a longer plan - down to the river for a night at Dawki or Shnongpdeng, boating in the calm of the morning, then back through Mawlynnong. The same car and driver stay with you throughout, the quote covers fuel, parking and tolls, and if you only have one day we will tell you honestly what fits and what does not.

Guwahati to Dawki taxi - FAQ

Updated August 2026

Can Guwahati to Dawki be done as a day trip?+

Physically yes, but it means 11-12 hours of driving for about an hour on the water, and we say so upfront. The plan that actually works is one night at Dawki or Shnongpdeng - you boat in the calm morning water when the light is best, and see Mawlynnong on the way back instead of racing past it.

How long does the drive take?+

About 5.5 to 6 hours for roughly 180 km - three hours to Shillong and another 2.5 down the Pynursla road. Add time in monsoon and on long-weekend traffic through Shillong.

When is the Umngot water clearest?+

November to April, with the glass-like water Dawki is famous for at its best in the cooler months. In monsoon (June-September) the river runs high and green and boating often pauses - if you are coming then, we will say so before you book, not after.

Is the boating included in the taxi quote?+

No - boats are hired directly at the ghat from the local boatmen's association, and you pay them on the spot. Our quote covers the car, driver, fuel, parking and tolls for the full run.

Can we cover Mawlynnong on the same trip?+

Yes - Asia's cleanest village and the Riwai living root bridge sit just off the return road, adding about an hour and a half. With an overnight at the river it fits easily; on a same-day dash it is what usually gets cut.

Can the driver stay overnight at Dawki?+

Yes. On multi-day trips the same car and driver stay with you, and their stay and meals are our cost, not yours. Riverside camps at Shnongpdeng are the usual night halt - we recommend the trusted ones and you book directly.
