Shnongpdeng is the village 8 km upstream of Dawki where the Umngot is at its clearest and the riverbank is lined with camps - tents, bamboo cottages, bonfires, and mornings where the boats sit on their own shadows. It is where we send guests who ask for the Dawki photograph but also want the night that goes with it: kayaking, snorkelling and the cliff jump all run right off the village beach.

The drive from Shillong is about 90 km and three hours, down the same Pynursla road as Dawki with the last stretch dropping to the river. We run it one-way to a camp, as an overnight round trip, or as the riverside night inside a longer circuit - the same car and driver stay with you either way. We do not book the camps themselves: we point you to the trusted ones, you book directly, and we plan the driving around your booking.

Shillong to Shnongpdeng taxi - FAQ

Updated August 2026

What is the difference between Dawki and Shnongpdeng?+

Dawki is the border town with the bridge and the busiest boating ghats; Shnongpdeng is the village 8 km upstream where the camps, kayaking and cliff jumping are, with clearer water and far fewer day-trippers. If you are staying the night, Shnongpdeng is almost always the better base.

Do you book the riverside camps?+

No - we do not book stays anywhere. We recommend the trusted camps and cottages at Shnongpdeng, you book directly with them, and we plan the pickup and driving around your booking. The camp typically includes dinner and breakfast; confirm when you book.

What activities run at Shnongpdeng?+

Boating, kayaking, snorkelling, ziplining and the cliff jump, all run by local operators on the village beach and paid there directly. They generally run October to April; in monsoon the river is high and activities pause.

How long is the drive from Shillong?+

About 3 hours for roughly 90 km - the Pynursla road is winding and the last drop to the river is slow, which is part of the charm. From Guwahati it is about 6 hours; many guests break that run with a Shillong night first.

Can the driver stay overnight and bring us back?+

Yes - the usual plan is down one afternoon, the night at a camp, boating or kayaking in the morning and back via Mawlynnong the next day. The driver's stay and meals on multi-day trips are our cost, not yours.

Is Shnongpdeng worth it over a Dawki day trip?+

If you can spare the night, yes without hesitation - morning water is calmer and clearer than anything a day-tripper sees, and the camps at night are the part guests talk about afterwards. If you only have the day, the Dawki run is the honest choice.
