Yes, with an early start - leave Shillong by 7:30 am and you get unhurried time at both. Krang Suri is the easier walk; Phe Phe involves a long flight of steps down and back up, so most groups do Phe Phe first and save the swim at Krang Suri for the afternoon.
How far is Krang Suri from Shillong?+
About 90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours each way - two hours on the good NH-6 stretch to Jowai, then a slower half hour on the Amlarem road. The falls are a further 15-20 minute walk from the parking area on a paved path.
Can you swim at Krang Suri?+
Yes - the plunge pool is the point. Life jackets are compulsory and are available on hire at the falls itself (paid there, not to us), and there are changing sheds. The water is genuinely cold outside April-June; swim before the afternoon shade hits the pool.
When is the best time for this day trip?+
October to April for the famous turquoise colour - the pool is at its bluest in the dry winter months. In monsoon both falls are enormous but the paths are slippery and the water turns white-green; it is still worth it, but it is a different trip.
Is the walk manageable for older travellers?+
Krang Suri, mostly yes - a paved downhill path with some steps, taken slowly. Phe Phe is a genuinely steep descent and climb back, and we would not suggest it for anyone with knee trouble. The driver will happily do Krang Suri and Thadlaskein Lake only, at an easier pace.
