Kaziranga is about 195 km east of Guwahati on NH-27, roughly five hours through Nagaon and Jakhalabandha with the Brahmaputra floodplain on your left most of the way. It is a straightforward highway drive - flat, fast in stretches, and nothing like the hill roads of Meghalaya.
Timing matters here more than on most routes, because the safaris run at dawn. Guests who leave Guwahati by mid-morning reach their lodge in the Kohora range with time to settle before an evening jeep run, then take the dawn safari the next morning. The park is open roughly 1 November to 30 April; it closes through the monsoon when the Brahmaputra floods the grasslands.

Updated August 2026
How long does Guwahati to Kaziranga take by car?+
About 5 hours for 195 km on NH-27. It is a highway drive through Nagaon, much easier going than the Meghalaya hill routes.
When is Kaziranga open?+
Roughly 1 November to 30 April. The park closes during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods the grasslands. Confirm exact dates with us before you plan - the opening shifts a little each year with the water.
Can we do Kaziranga as a day trip from Guwahati?+
Not sensibly. That would be 10 hours of driving for one safari. Kaziranga needs one night minimum - arrive in the afternoon, take an evening or dawn jeep safari, and drive back the next day.
Do you arrange the safari and the lodge?+
As part of a Kaziranga package we plan the safari timing, guide the permit and slot booking, and recommend trusted lodges near the gate - you book the lodge directly. As a plain taxi transfer, the quote covers the car and driver only - tell us which you want.
Can we come from Shillong instead of Guwahati?+
Yes - Shillong to Kaziranga is about 280 km and 6.5 hours, since you first come down to the plains. Many guests do Meghalaya first, then Kaziranga on the way back to Guwahati airport.
