Kaziranga is the natural second half of a Northeast trip, and from Shillong it is a long but easy day - about 280 km and six and a half hours, first descending to Jorabat on the Guwahati highway, then turning east onto NH-27 along the Brahmaputra.
Start early. Leaving Shillong by 7 am puts you at your Kohora lodge with the afternoon in hand, which is what you want if you have booked a dawn jeep safari the next morning. Because it is a long day, this is the route where vehicle choice really shows - an Innova, a Crysta or the Endeavour is worth the difference over six and a half hours, and groups above seven should take a Tempo Traveller.

Shillong to Kaziranga National Park taxi - FAQ
Updated August 2026
How long is Shillong to Kaziranga by road?+
About 280 km and 6.5 hours. You come down from the hills to Jorabat first, then run east on NH-27 - so it is longer than the map distance suggests.
What time should we leave Shillong?+
By 7 am. That gets you to Kohora in the early afternoon with time to settle before an evening safari, and leaves you fresh for the dawn jeep run the next morning.
Can we stop at Guwahati on the way?+
Yes - Kamakhya Temple is a common halt and adds about an hour and a half including the climb and darshan. Tell us at booking so we build it into the day rather than rushing it.
Is one night at Kaziranga enough?+
One night gets you a dawn safari, which is the main event. Two nights lets you take both the Central and Western ranges and see the park properly - the Western range at Bagori has the highest rhino density.
Which vehicle for this route?+
An Innova, a Crysta or the Endeavour for most groups - it is a 6.5-hour day and the comfort is worth it. Tempo Traveller for eight or more.
