Tawang is about 450 km from Guwahati, and the honest answer is that it takes two days. The first runs east and north to Tezpur and up into the Arunachal foothills, ending at Dirang or Bomdila for the night. The second climbs over Sela Pass at roughly 13,700 feet and drops into Tawang - the highest, slowest and most spectacular stretch of road in the Northeast.
Two things make this route different from every other one we run. It needs an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange in advance from your ID and photographs - foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead. And it needs a mountain driver and a high-clearance vehicle; we run Innovas, Crystas and Endeavours here, never sedans. Sela Pass can close in snow, so we keep a buffer day in the plan.

Guwahati to Tawang taxi - FAQ
Updated August 2026
Can Guwahati to Tawang be done in one day?+
No, and it should not be attempted. It is around 450 km with a 13,700 ft pass and long slow mountain sections. We break it with a night at Dirang or Bomdila - that is the standard, and it is also the safe way to gain altitude.
Do I need a permit for Tawang?+
Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, which we arrange in advance from your ID proof and photographs. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, which takes longer - tell us early.
Is Sela Pass open all year?+
Usually, but it can close for a day or two after heavy snow between December and March. We build a buffer day into winter itineraries. The Sela tunnel has made the crossing more reliable than it used to be, but weather still decides.
Which vehicle do you send?+
An Innova, an Innova Crysta or an Endeavour. This route needs ground clearance and a driver who has done the pass - we do not send sedans to Tawang.
Is altitude a problem?+
Tawang sits at about 10,000 ft and Sela is higher. Breaking the drive at Dirang or Bomdila gives your body a night to adjust, which is exactly why we do it that way. Tell us if anyone in the group has a heart or respiratory condition.
How many days should the whole trip be?+
Six days and five nights from Guwahati is the comfortable minimum - two days up, two at Tawang and Bumla, two back. Anything shorter means spending nearly all of it in the car.
